really? i'd never heard that...but i measured across the cylinders adn the block is a 221...but the guys who redid my heads checked the numbers and told me they were off of a 1978 302 and when i got head gaskets and stuff for it it was the 302 that matched up to em.....so i'm pretty sure they fit...i had to problems at all...but using those totally destroys any compression you might have...it's got way less power to it than my 4-cylinder volvo..thats why the 289 is goin in soon

302 heads will bolt on but the combustion chamber cc's are too big for the 221's little 3.5" bore. The 221 has a 2.87" stroke/3.5" bore but the external size of the block is the same as a 302.

oh yea,i did some checkin' and if your using those big chamber 302 heads, compression ratio is below 7 to 1,but if you can find some of the 52cc 302 heads and shave 'em about 40 thousanths(book says you can go 50) that puts you back close to 9 or a little over, zero deck the block and and and your still about 80 cubic inches short ,just like me.lol-thats only 25%-that 302 sounds better the more i think about it

hehe maybe i'll do some of that stuff to it after i swap it out for the 289...then i'll have some time to experiment with it.. if anyone has some original 221 heads that they'd part with i would like to put this engine back to being original someday i think.. let me know
