The stuff hanging off the front of the engine is somewhat different. The lower radiator hose swaps sides. I think the distance from the block to the end of the fan spacer is longer. The 79 has a different harmonic balancer and four bolt lower pully.
You can bolt the front dress from the old on the new block but will have to match the balance front and rear. These engines are externally balanced so you have to make sure the C4 flexplate is the same balance as the old harmonic balancer. Stu will probably chime in with the specifics.
The old front cover has the oil fill in it. The new block doesn't have the matching hole so you will have to add oil through the valve cover. You will have PCV to deal with too. Just use new valve covers or put the apropriate grommets in the old covers. Get the PCV valve for an 85 Mustang V8 and matching grommet for a clean look.
Brain not working, must sleep

Gee, what an upgrade. From a 289 to a 302. What else you planning to do with that engine, Scott?

WCC
Plan first. What do you want the car to do? Do you want maximum power at full throttle for the drags? Then you want a high stall converter, bigass carbureter, headers, rear gears that are matched to tires and finish line rpm with heads and cam to match. Useless on the street though.
You can buy intake manifold gaskets with screens in the ports that will help to break up the fuel and allow a tunnel ram on the street. Add a lopey cam and the converter to utilise the manifold and the car starts to be a pain at low speeds. Quite a few people tweak their rides a bit too much and it takes away from the pleasure of toolin down the pike.
Just consider the whole package from the air cleaner to the exhaust tips when you do the engine. That is part of the consideration though. You have to figure the drive train that takes advantage of the engine mods too.

Stay under 270 on the duration. 420-470s on the lifter.
Stay with a 600cfm carb.
If you want pul an extra 15 hp, roller rockers andscrew in Studs and STUD GIRDLE is a must.
3:50-3:80 rear end gears.
With this combo you will be in th 250-275 HP range at 5500 rpm.
Now if you have the $$$$$$$ cha ching, go to a roller lifter cam with HYD rollers.
Thats another 15 HP, you can use a EdelB. Torker manifold and have good cruising with the bump, bump sound of a big cam.
You should pull around 2400 rpm at 60 mph, you need the torque curve to come in at about 4000 rpm.
this combo is going to give you a 35 mph to 90 mph a pulling M.Fer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Its going to do that and fast!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would stick with a close to stock converter, since its a street ride.
With a dyno to help you tune or a good carb man you can get close to 325 hp on 91 oct pump gassssss.
You may even pickup fuel mileage if you can stay out of the carb!!!!!!!!!!

scott, I know were to get a tunnel ram for $125, but it is for a cleveland and a dominator carb.now i'm not sure but I think you can buy adapter's to make that intake fit a 302 or it might be to wide. maybe you guys would know, I have seen cleveland intakes on FE's.
