Has anyone done this? I have heard that its not good because of moisture retention, but I didn't think that a plastic cap was porous (or else mosture would get in too). I got an MSD adapt a cap, but it only comes in red. I would rather have it be black or blue.

i got the red cap and the blue bottom and i was thinking of painting the bottom red. but i'm not sure the paint wouldnt cause some kind of problem but i doubt it would be a moisture retension problem. i would just be worried about some kind of arcing goin on,but then you would see it
and by the way,if you are still lookin for a trunk lock and key there is one on ebay.do a search on 62 mercury without the meteor part#nosmileys

It shouldn't hurt it as long as the cap has a vent on the top or somewhere else.

CA, I know the lock you are talking about. I bought that same lock before but it turned out not to be the right one. Im not sure what car it is for but its 95% correct, but it wont work without modfication. I got the guy to stop listing it under "meteor." He doesnt really know about the product, he just happens to have a lot of them.

i think the little vent is due to air ionization in the cap(like it vents the ozone) back in the late sixties we use to drill a couple holes in the cap to vent it,but only for strip use or street racin
have you tried emailing one of thse guys sellin meteor parts on ebay about a lock?

No big deal, I have painted several over the years.
Caps are normally phenolic resin, a super dense plastic made by mixing formaldahyde and carbolic acid.
So its dense, lacquer thinner will not hurt them!!!
The only thing I ever had problems with was when I drilled a hole in the cap, jumping fire and mositure being drawn in!!
We use seal the d.cap, to run the car and get it upto temp. then immediatly push a rubber plug into the hole, end of moisture in the dist.
