Maybe filter cloggage but the teeny tiny little molded vacuum line between the hard line and the vacuum modulator and the hard line could be t.u.
Crud in the governor could be the culprit too. I had the same prob and it finally went away and I replaced the vac mod and molded ell but it came back. I did change the fluid and filter at the same time.

I'd check the vacuum modulator, it's responsible for the upshifts in some way. The governor controls the downshifts to 1st mostly but it controls the upshifts in some way as well.....Geesh....That makes a lot of sense...LOL ;D

I got the same problem but don't see any vacuum lines to run to a modulator, I was thinking about just rebuilding it

There's a check ball in the the valve body, and when the seat gets worn, the ball doesn't like to come out. Rob

I've been doing some research on re-rebuilding my 2-speed. Is this problem with a worn seat and sticky ball carport repairable assuming the work environment is immaculate?

Hey rusty these guys don't know, I do, I'm surprised we corresponded you live close to me, gave you my number etc no contact ? Your were hot to buy a starter etc The prob with regular up shifts in our older cars - trouble shooting no one will help you with yet I live so close .... Probably have rubbing of your vacuum feed -steel line half way down tunnel small crack or rub hole in line results in problems with regular upshifts.

Forgot all about this thread. Ended up my problem is/was exactly what Rob described. The check ball gets worn and the seat gets a little buildup over the years. This causes the non existent shifts to second gear until the trans REALLY warms up. I used a quart of Trans-X, thinking it just might help. After a few miles the trans hit second and continued to do so the next day after a few miles. 3rd day it shifted perfectly. After 8 to 10 months it stops shifting again because the Trans-X is light and burns off. I add another quart and it shifts like new for another 8 to 10 months. I had already tried all of the other possibilities like vacuum, regulator. Thank You Rob

There is a couple hundred years experience in the heads around here. Play nice and they'll offer up what they know. It just takes a while for an answer sometimes ;0

There's a check ball in the the valve body, and when the seat gets worn, the ball doesn't like to come out. Rob how hard is it to get to this checkvalve? and where would i find the parts? cuz ive flushed my tranny, cleaned the filter (just looked like a screen in a box so i just dusched it out), blew out all the lines, ive got a new radiator, ive gone thru the vacum lines and done the vacum modulator. it still dont shift outta first till its hot. once its there she shifts like a brand new tranny... so my next task once shes runnin again is to dig into the valve body, but i would like to know where to start. i can rebuild a manual all day but automatics are very forien to me.

Possible that the governor is sticking till oil warms up. Accumulation of varnish over the years on the valve would cause it to stick

Most likely sat a few years & seals hardened. Once warmed up - thoroughly - & it shifts first time is ok rest of day, but tomorrow first time same thing. Seals are cheap, but tranny needs to come out & be dis assembled to replace

Like I said in my post, the TransX stuff REALLY works. May take a couple of days to do it's job, butt... TransX has a distinct order to it, and after a few days it's pretty much burned off. I was super cautious about it at first, but was recommended by an old car guy. I'll post a link below to a place that has a lot of good pics, info and parts for you to use, if needed. www.charlietranny.com/2speed.htmFordomatic
