Well time for a new motor for my merc, and I lucked out big time by scoring a very nice 302 core and some freshly rebuilt E7 heads for free. The core has very low wear, still a noticeable amount of cross hatch and great looking (and original ford) bearings. If all the specs check out, im just going to freshen up the bores, scrub it down really well, stab in a generic 204/214@.050 cam, re-use my existing weiand stealth intake and 600 eddy carb. I figure I can get this sucker done for around $500 including a re-ring kit, cam/lifters, gaskets, oil pump, fasteners etc. I wish i could afford some nice heads, but oh well. not bad for free bringing it home

Long story, but the wife and I have settled down up here and bought a house. She has a great career going (and I did haha), and we have family up here. I'm going to be Mr. mom for a while here pretty soon, and I gotta get the merc going as my baby carrier.

Those goodies can make for a very hot as well as cheap rebuild. Stu turned me on to a set of pistons and rods with rings years back on ebay that I absolutely stole for 170 bucks because they were standard bore with some dyno time on them.. New Mahle bearings for dirt off ebay too.
Those heads respond very well to a mild port job. Are the springs roller or flat tappet? You can also get FRPP roller cams off ebay for cheap too and still stay under your 500 buck budget.

Ok, update.
Block is an '80 and is in great shape. The crank and bearings look fantastic. The bore spec'd out with hardly any wear, taper was less than .004". The only thing the block really could use are some fresh cam bearings. I just ran a glaze breaker through the cylinders and they look great.
W2zero, the heads are a bit of an unknown. I need to pull some springs and get their pressure measured. Since i have a pre-roller block, the plan is a flat tappet cam, especially since I am unfamiliar with SBFs (all my engine experience is with SBCs). I plan on cleaning up the heads, as there are some very noticeable casting flaws which could be easily corrected (exhaust ports suck, bosses are very bulky etc).

E7TE just means that the heads are the 87 Truck Engine casting. Depending on where they came from, All passenger cars 86 and later came with roller cams but the trucks had flat tappet cams up until about 90 or maybe a little later. If they have the roller springs then they are good to .500" lift max. Trick Flow has a spring kit that has the springs, dampers, keepers and everything for 138 bucks that is good to mid .500's at least that is specific to ford iron heads. Just remember that you will need an oil supplement with ZDDP for a flat tappet setup with any lift outside bone stock that is going to rev at all.

Thanks, I got some conflicting info on casting #s, I'm going to just need a real mild spring as im going to run a cam around .450/.470. The car is a driver and has after market A/C. I want a real grunty motor that has some tq right off idle, and idles smoothly.
