What are the thoughts on open or closed PCV systems speaking for purely performance reasons? We're talking hotrodding here, no tree hugging allowed! Any difference in horsepower, etc. ?

well, they are spose to help with ring seal due to the vacuum they put in the crank case but they are also like a bigass vacuum leak so when i rebuild the 62s 289 block i think i'ma gonna give the open/closed system a try but instead of drawin the the carb base i'll be drawin thru the air cleaner-gonna try it anyway.if it dont work i'll just use the newer versions of pcv valves because i dont think the old style works that well,i can hear the d a m n thing rattlein when it aint spose ta

I was curious about the open or closed for power. I know that you've got to vent just wondering if going back into the carb or not makes any difference in the power band. I know that it is a lot cleaner to go back through the carb both in terms of polution and oily gas coming out of the valve cover.

Pretty simple really. True, the increased vacuum helps with the ring seal and does equate to a tad bit more power as already mentioned. Burning it by routing it through the carb base or the air cleaner give varying degrees of vacuum but both will keep excess oily crap off your engine.
