Sorry I haven't been around in a while, my Merc has been in storage waiting for it's new owner to take it over...my son. My 1963 Custom will be one of his High School graduation presents. My Merc is all OEM right down to the 60K miles on the odometer but it needs brake updating. I know years ago I had seen that Stu upgraded his 62 to disc brake & dual resevoir master with a booster. If memory serves me correctly I think I read that all the parts needed from master cyl, proportioning valve, spindles etc can be a direct replacement from a Ford Granada/Mercury Monarch/ Lincoln Versaille, am I correct? Are there any other sources for the parts required as well as a write up on how to do it? It's time for the old girl to see new life in a young owner! sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/557581_4934806213819_816218552_n.jpg

There are better alternatives than the Granada swap. You can get a better setup that is a direct bolt on replacement and keep your stock spindles. That avoids bump steer that is built in with the Granada et al setup if you stay with the stock ride height.
One of the vendors who sells a disc swap bracket set is scarebird. You can look him up online. He has worked directly with the Fairlane Club of America's Bob Mannel to fine tune the fitup and function.

I have a pair of 63 S33's I will be converting, but my question is for the more or less same conversion to Falcons. I have - oh boy, another pair of 64 Ranchero's already converted. One is Granada the other was a kit the previous owner paid a fortune for. Both share a problem (not shared with the Metero's) The Master Cylinders are directly below the engine cross brace that goes to the shock towers? It is nearly impossible to remove the lids to check fluid. The meteor cross bars are bolted on, so no problem, but the Falcons are part of the Uni body. I HATE the major hassle, & it is a major hassle - of checking or adding fluid, any suggestions ?

Scarebird is the way to go if you do not want to get really intensive. Its pretty simple, and the only major work you have to do is getting your hubs machined. I converted my 63 Olds wagon over the summer to front disks with the Scarebird swap, and I have to say that the cost was not bad, and the only hard part is getting them to bleed. If you can, swing for a power brake booster, its worth using up the other space. This is what the scarebird kit looks like. the hardest part is swapping over master cylinders. Summit racing also sells a really nice proportioning valve that I have on my 63 (also on my wagon now) thats affordable. www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-g3910/overview/ as for the brake booster for my wagon they had me use a fairmont brake booster, but thankfully they give you a list of what you need when you get the kit. The issues I have had with the scarebird kit are not really major, although my dad and I did have to grind a slight bit on the bolts that hold the calipers on because they were hitting the rotors. Also the bigger rotors require 15 inch wheels at minimum.

There is another vendor who makes brackets to fit original Mustang four caliper brakes on our spindles and it doesn't require machining of anything. My buddy with a 65 Fairlane bought their complete kit and is very happy with it. Now I just have to get him to remind me who the vendor is.

Nice setup! Going to give them a call. The cost is minimal compared to the peace of mind I will have with my kid driving this. You know kid today as used to these rice burners with power brakes & rack & pinion. My old 63 is like a battleship to him. (and we considered it a mid sized car)

I kkeep reading that Scarebird & others prices are "not bad" Why haven't I heard an actual - approximated - cost, as "not bad" is quite relative. Also, I asked in this forum & have never heard back about a problem with the engine cross braces, particularly on Falcon conversions to disc brakes. The problem is the master cylinder sits directly below the permanently attached engine cross braces rendering it nearly impossible to remove cap to add or check fluid. ANY SUGGESTIONS?? I have 2 such conversions in 64 Rancheros & sure would love accessibility to the reservoir? thanxxxx ...

Somewhere on the site it shows the Geo Storm power brake set up that I use on my Meteor. The set up was also for the Falcon. It clears the cross braces and the power brake unit has a small enough diameter to clear everything. It works great.

(and we considered it a mid sized car) Its worth it, I'm probably the youngest person on the forums at age 18, and I've been driving my Meteor since I was 16 (a few times when I had my permit), and the piece of mind is great. I actually feel that the Meteor does not need rack and pinion for daily driver duty, mainly a stiffer sway bar on the front (thats my big suggestion, my dad's 62 has the stock sway bar where I have one thats 2 1/2 inches I want to say, and it works wonders).

Finally got hold of my bud. Here is what he put on. www.discbrakeswap.com/parts/parts#swap1He used the first one. No new spindles, no turning of anything and can still use 14" wheels because the calipers are four piston ford that fit early Mustangs.

From what I have researched. the newest Scarebird kit is the way to go if you want to use your stock 14" wheels. I emailed them and they said the new kit fits stock wheels. Basically you buy their bracket for 75-85.00 1991-94 Toyota Previa rotors 1990 Chevy Celebrity Calipers/pads 79-92 Caddy El Dorado hoses Machine your hubs to fit the rotors and your set.
Im going to try this way.......
