Ran into a little snag on the 289/c-4 swap. Im getting close to dropping in the engine /tranny and was looking at the driveshafts that I have. I have both the original and the driveshaft that came from the car that I got the 289/c-4 from. I heard that I needed the yoke from the donor car since its different from the mercomatic. Is this correct? If so Im running into the problem that the u joints are a different size. Looks like they are about a 1/16 off. Being the Mercomatic ujoint looks to be 1" and the donor car(64 Comet I believe) is 1 1/16. Anyone run into this problem and what did you do to solve it? Thanks

count the splines, the old Mercomatic is probably 26 spline. You need to check the newer transmission and be sure to check to see if the trans output shaft is a match or more likely a 28 spline. Use a matching slip yoke.
Re: the u-joint difference. Just determine what two sizes you need, width and diameter, and buy the joint at the parts store that matches. Yes, they make one that will adapt. I have checked in the past and the cross casting in the middle is the same but the cups can be different diameters and thickness at the ends. I have just mixed and matched cups to make the change. Just use matching ones on opposite sides of the cross.

ok. Yeah Ive got the slip yoke that came with the c-4 and its 28 spline. It just has 1" cups on it. The driveshaft off the merc has 1 1/16 size cups. Ill try the parts store and see if they can come up with something. So far all I have seen is 1 1/16 to 1 1/8 cups conversion u joint. 64 must have been a one year only deal or ? I guess if it comes down to it I can buy a new slip yoke? Weird that a u joint would have 2 different cup sizes on one ujoint. Seems like it would have been easier just to make one common size and be done with it.

My 64 has an 89 aod in it and the original drive shaft with a later C5 slip yoke. Plus there is a 9" rear that is a newer vintage at the other end of the shaft. U-joints are the same on it but the cups only match in opposite pairs. It was originally 6 cyl with the same trans and rear as yours.
