I know I am off topic - BUT - I recently bought a true show car in top condition. It is a 52 Merc Monterey 2 door hard top needing nothing. If I could figure how to post pictures I would. anyway, I am hoping for some info of identifying the flathead V8. Seller (a dealer) said is is a 255 c.i. "B" block. (what ever that is) It has polished Offenhauser heads, (24 bolt) 2 Stronberg carbs, Fenton headers. Distributer (electronic) is in front by the alternator & A/C compressor (no typo)The bell housing is removable & just in front of Bell H (on passenger side of block) is "K1724"
It is highly unlikely I will remove the perfect running engine, but sure would like information on it. It may possibly be the original 52 Merc engine - who knows. I toy with the idea of replacing it with a built 302 or perhaps a 351W & 4 or 5 speed (it has 3 speed over drive).
My poor old 63 S33 & 65 Comet 404 wagon has been neglected since I bought the 52. Any help would be appreciated here or directly to doberdawg@comcast.net
I have googled, visited sites etc. no help other than I learned to go count the head studs (24) & note that the bell housing is NOT part of the block & the dist is in front. Can anybody help?

Cannot remember how to identify the 255 from the 239 from an assembled engine. The 255 was used in vehicle made by the Lincoln Mercury Division while the 239 was used by the Ford Division. The bore and stroke were the difference between the 2 engines. The distributor comes out at about 45 degrees on the passenger side of the engine, it was easy to strip the timing gears in the 255.

So, who is flathead jack (email). vanpeltsales.com never answers their phones. Mine is supposedly a 255 with polished offenhouser heads & intake manifold, Fenton Headers, electronic ignition, A/C & 12 v alternator - all/mostly chrome. I did pay big $$$ for the car & it is very nice. I do kick around a T-5 5 speed, & will most likely add power steer & brakes, perhaps disc. Mostly I just want it for cruisin so the pS & BB would be nice, disc - anything but this absolutely. Also I bought it & another show car because I am tired (66 yrs old) of projects, wanna play.

Is it still on U-Tube? That dealer sold it to a home spun dealer, & I bought it from him with most issues fixed. Flathead Jack told me to build one is now $13K without all the goodies mine has. That made me feel better, as I paid $21K - & cried Never paid that much before. Then to add insult to injury the same day bought a 64 Ranchero show car. I was looking for a 64 Ranchero for 3 years. It has tubular suspension, power disc brakes, power steering, rebuile CHP 302 & C-^ (rebuilt) & rebuilt posi rear end. It is awesome. So, now I have 2 finished products, & am almost through wrenching. Gotta put the valve covers back on my 57 ford (428 Cobra Jet) & I suppose sell it, my S33 & others

Thought you might like this, I can't post the pic of the car, will try again when I get home Saw it at a Cruise in outside of Ottawa, Ontario a 54 Merc looking totally stock running the original Flathead with all the era speed equipment, & a blower! The cool factor was the trans, a late model Ford OD, 4RW70 electronicly controlled, guy says she cruises at 70 mph @ 1900rpm

Yes, it is on U tube. I am in process of rebuilding front ends on both cars, & hoping to add power disc brakes & a 5 speed to the 52, since it is already a Mildly customized (dash board & gauges) & old style hot rod. The discs & 5 speed will both help stopping. I am having a very hard time getting straight answers - anywhere - on a workable dual reservoir set up for 52-53 Mercs. Available for 48-51 & 54-56 & all these years on Fords but not Mercs. The 53 is as straight as the 52 on U tube, but not as recent paint, & it is bone stock. The only non original parts are baby moons (original hub caps in trunk), elec (6v) fuel pump - original still bolted disconnected on engine, & antenna with a spring to bend if hitting a tree branch. ZERO rust on either car. emails to doberdawg@comcast.net get noticed days/weeks faster.
Yes, flathead jack is a great site, if only my pocket book allowed..............

Canadian Fords and Mercury ran the flatheads in 1954. We did not go to the o/h 272 till 1955. Any 54 with a flathead is Canadian built and the 54 with the o/h is a U.S. built model

Thanks, I was beginning to suspect as much - flat head wise. I don't think the 272 was used anywhere3 before 55. 239 came out in 54 & I believe the 272 came out in 55 anywhere in the4 world.
