I have a T-10 with stock shifter (like early Mustangs) & need to replace the chrome trim ring & rubber boot. The small hole in the boot must slide over the shifter & the hole is way to small. So - 0000 I surmise one must remove the knob & spring loaded thing you pull with fingers to allow shifting into reverse. My Ford Shop Manual is no help. How do I remove the knob & "release lever" ??

This could be easy or it could be a pain depending on the shifter assy. The tee reverse lockout on some shifters has a tiny roll pin that can be driven out and make it easy. Unfortunately, you will probably find that yours does not have that. Break out the lube of choice, wrap a washrag of hot water over the boot and grease that puppy up and if the rubber is still resilient, it will stretch one side at a time over the tee..... with luck. Then there is the repeat stretch on reassembly, we hope. If not then you will be out the price of a new one which will stretch a bit easier on the return trip than the old one could.

Thanks but ... Are you, perhaps, thinking of some other car or shifter? I have 4 of these, 2 on drivers & 2 on shelves. None have a tiny roll pin that I can see - or a place for one. One shifter only (out of 4) has the ball/knob removable. It is in 2 pieces - bottom chrome, top black. Each half un-threads separately on the (ONLY)one I have ever seen removed. The shift boot is brand new, & FORD. It is the second I have tried to install - first was destroyed in the effort as tiny hole is re-enforced hard rubber & can not be stretched much.
So, first - how do you remove the shift knob without ruining it in a vice? Second how do you remove the reverse lock out "T"? I suspect that even if I had one with the pin there would need to be a first step (before removing pin) & that is detach the spring from inside the inaccessible center of hollow shifter?
Anybody have experience, or a site explaining process?? I hate to ruin another boot but am considering attempting stretch & coming on from the bottom (that is where I ruined the other)or on my ugliest (the only one knob can easily be removed from) attempt to stretch boot hole over the reverse lock out "T" as it is smaller (to stretch over) than knob or bottom. I would prefer using my nicest shifter rather than my ugliest - HELP:))) !!! & thanxxxxxxxx

If I were you I would check over at Mustangs&more for this info, those guys live, breath & dream Mustangs, I;m sure there is a way without breaking the darn thing!

Yeah, I have no experience..... right...
My shifter is one of those with the two piece ball. Upper ball is black and threaded with a concave top where the pattern would be engraved. The lower third or quarter of the ball is chrome and is threaded and serves as a jam nut. There are two reliefs for a wrench. By first twisting the lower part of the ball downwards, the upper in the opposite or righty-tighty lefty-loosey respectively, they can be removed. My shifter has the roll pin. It is a shifter with a Ford part number in the forged bottom. Three bucks at a swap meet and then drove the pin out to return the shifter to operability and in the process Changed the lockout to operate as the gear selector detent.

Roy, what is the Mustang URL? My trannys & shifter are the same as Mustangs but older. Mine were stock in 63 Falcons, & one is a Daggenham 4 speed (for 1963 6 cyl Falcons & a couple years later Mustang 6 cylinders)also. I did get the boot on (tore it a bit) but have often considered a Mustang forum......thanxxxxxxx
