I am used to questions re 5 or 6 bolt blocks & bell housings & 2 speed Ford-O-Matic vs. C4 trannys. Is the 1964 1/2 Mustang an exception? I have a chance to get original 260/automatic (combo)from a 64 1/2 Mustang. I usually associate 260's with 5 bolt bell housings. I usually associate C4's as 6 bolt bell housings . I don't believe Mustangs ever used 2 speed automatics, so-oooo
My question is: Will the 64 1/2 automatic be a 3 speed or 2 speed? A C4 or
AND what is a C3?
I am interested in installing in a 63 Ranchero but do not want a 2 speed automatic

64 all V8 Mustangs are C4 3spd trans. A C3 was used behind 6 and 4 cylinder engines. Cruisomatic was big car trans and even though sometimes the C4 is called a cruiso, it is different.

The fordomoatic was the 2 speeds avail up to 62, I think dropped for 63 WZero is correct- Yes, the C-3 is a light weight & not strong enough behind a V-8 Your 64 1/2 is a 3 speed C-4 The Cruiseomatic is just another name for a C-4, according to my buddies over at Fairlane Club of America site

I am glad to know about mine being a C4. I have a couple of 63 Falcons, an early & a late. They still have 2 speed automatics. My confusion is I still have no clue what a C3 is. I occasionally hear about them. Through 64 Falcons used 2 speed automatics though I am told 64 1/2 Comets & Mustangs have C4's
Was the C3 another name for Fordomatic, or since Roy says 2 speeds through 62 (& I have had a BUNCH of 63's all with 2 speeds) is C3 a late fordomatic?
FINAL question. The 64 1/2 Mustang engine/trans I got yesterday has - I guess - the earliest C4. The 63 Ranchero I want to put it in (originally 6 cyl) has bad 289/302 with C4 & a REAL nice Locar shifter. Does anybody know whether the early C4 & later (66-ish) C4's use the same hole in hump? In that case I am hoping to use the Locar shifter. Any ideas or knowledge here? thanks again
