you have the 1310 which is the weakest = stock
then the 1330 which is the mid
and finally the 1350 = heavy duty. Uses larger diameter u-bolts also wider.
we compared my new dana 60 1350 yoke Not slip yoke to my 8inch yoke and you can tell the differance for sure.
as far as breaking something first or second I really don't think it matters. I blew the side out of my case and my axles still look new. 28 spline axles from 1962 now how do you explain that. You'd think my axles would have broke first. Maybe twist them or something.

This is probably the coolest post ever. You are an inspiration to us all!! What would a guy expect to pay for that rear end assembly?

i'd bet it depends where you find it= thats a silly answer! around here if you buy a rear at the pick a part/ecology type wreckers a rear is about 75 to 95 bucks drum to drum or disk to disk whether it's IRS or not but then they charge you separate for each control arm at about 25 bucks a pop. still be less than 200 bucks complete though. doesn't make any different what type it is or what it's made of. you can find that rear on Mustangs and Lincolns and ?. Jag rear would be kool too because of the inboard brakes. but i wonder what the weight difference might be between IRS and solid? and then most peeps are doin the drag race thing right now and IRS is not really suited for that but it's great for road racing.

Some IRS Cougars and Birds are in the tens at the drags.

you can find that rear on Mustangs and Lincolns and ?. Nope. That particular IRS is on the Mustang Cobra only. And the 2003-2004 is different from the earlier ones. Lincoln LS IRS is much weaker, I think.

I wanted a basically new one, so I bought it from a guy with a 4000 mile, never seen rain, 2003 Cobra. I think I paid something like $1500 for it. They show up on ebay every so often.

Cool! I'm glad our project can help other folks as well. We are to the point now of driving the car to car shows, etc., and we get a lot of questions about it. It's a fun ride!

Sorry for the off model post. I posted here July 2009. Over a year later finally got to drive my 66 Mustang this past weekend without the tires rubbing. Per our email correspondence, I ended up having to flare the fenders for the tires to clear. Thank you Paul and Eliot for sharing.

Paul: Little of topic but are your wheels an aftermarket "bullet" type or the real Ford? Can you let me know the size & specifically the backspacing I'm assuming they cleared your calipers ok? I;m running the Fatman option calipers, Wilwood twin piston fronts & i;ve got a little rub where the Torg-thrust 11's spoke meet the center hub, just enough to mark the powder coating, Wilwood says theres lots of meat right there & to just touch em with a grinder & not to try & clearance the actual wheel spokes. I know removing material from the wheel could mess with balance, but, were talking a tiny amount of material Anyway, i might sell off the torg-thrust 11;s for a wheel with a better backspace, hence, my question Thanks
