Has anyone seen or looked into this rear end for our mercs ? it's only 28 spline but theres trac lock options great stock gears and I believe these specific years 90 - 92 RANGER 4x4 width is VERY close to our width. Problem is I can't get a confirmed or even reputable measurement of width ..... ANYONE ??

the width is within an inch, but the driveline will not line up with the hump in the floor of the car... sadly..

An inch smaller ? hump you mean tunnel is it out more then a sledge hammer cause I got a welder ? the axel tubes are pressed in ? couldn't it be possible with all the 8.8 28 spline axels to find 2 axels with the right lengths on 1 side and swap out tubes to make a narrow 8.8 ? Anyone have access to the needed tech info ?

you could do that but wouldn't it be easier to get a Mustang 8.8 and put leaf spring pads on it? the Mustang rear is REAL close. i don't remember the measurements but when i did my Capri i thought the Mustang rear would fit the 62 with no probs.

What year of a stang? I'm thinking of getting a 5.0 out of a wrecked stang from the junk yard and if the rear end will fit i'll grab it to.

Stang will have to be narrowed. You are on the right track as far as 8.8" but the trick is to use two same side axles and shorten one side of the Ranger/Explorer axle. That centers the pinion. The axle tubes are plug welded to the cast center after pressing in.

So is it hard to separate a plug weld ? That's what I meant on the 2 axels 2 sides thing. Any one know the measurements for these common axels ? or where to find ? Stang axels are cheap as dirt are there 2 different axel lengths on them ?

Almost any 8.8" will do, if your going to shorten anyway, get a T-coupe rear or 90;s stang gt most are disc t-coupes autos 3:73;s trac lok disc brakes standards 3:55;s trac lok disc brakes Shorten 1.75" per side & use 2 right side Bronco 11 axles. But, i;ve heard or read the Explorer 8.8" is even a better choice with 31 spline axles. I;ve used the bronco 11 axles for about a year with no problems, just recently, the one side is complaining Because one of the right side axles will now be turning the opposite to what it has turned all its life, depending on how hard its been used, they don;t like being asked to turn the opposite way, at least, after many, burnouts!

How did you separate the plug weld, is it difficult ? Got any pictures I'm probably gonna go this route if it's worked fine in another meteor. Thanks, ROY!!

Yea, like that! Actually, i had a shop that does custom welding do it for me, but thats basicaly the drill. Now, cutting off the flange as i;m going to Explorer rear discs & the stock ends don;t fit the Ex. backing plates. Had to get ends from Currie & the spacing flange to rotor is different too. This is something to watch out for when switching drum to disc, that end spacing can bite you

If you use the later Explorer or F150 8.8 they already have the right flanges for the Explorer discs. Since you are already altering the housing it would widen your choice of donor vehicles. There are a couple of ways to adapt the exp ebrake to the stock handle as well.

Are the explorer 8.8 offset diffs so I could use the 2 shorter sides or go with 2 90 - 92 4.0 ranger rears and make 1 ?
