If I want a posi 9" rear end what would be the best car or truck to get it out of?

They say that 57-59 Fords had the narrowest 9" rears. Apparently it is exactly the same as 65-66 Mustang and bolts right in. Being that my Meteor AND hubby's 58 are going up on stands in the next couple weeks, I will measure evrything from spring pads to backing plates. If it's the same or possibly narrower than the Meteor, then we have a couple of spares at the club shop and ones going in. 9" posis are not that hard to find and the whole thing might be cheaper than trying to find an 8" posi. Depending what model of 57 or 58 it's from you end up with 11 x 1 3/4 or 11 x 2 drums on the back also.

8" Track lock is an easy find. You can even get one with 31 spline axles but that particular one is a bit spendy. You can buy a new Track Lock or locker carrier from Summit. store.summitracing.com/egnsearch.asp?N=700+400949+4294918887+115+4294895172You can also find those parts for less by shopping online. Whether you change to a nine depends on what you want to spend and how much of the work you are going to do yourself or pay to have done. In any case, it ain't free.

If it is narrowed and has axles that fit...... You're pretty much there except for welding the spring perches on. Another possible car to check on is the Galaxies up to 63 since they are all 9" and pretty narrow to begin with. Some things to consider is what kind of brakes you want and how wide a tire and rim offset you want to end up with. That is more critical the lower the car is.
