Finally got around to pulling the eng, trans, rear off of the '88 LSC which I'm using as my donor mule for the Meteor.
I plan on using: -GT40P heads, -B-cam or keep the stock cam -1.7 Crane rollers -Performer intake -Holley 600 V.S. carb -AOD trans with Transgo Kit -8.8 disk rear with 3.73 gears
I have most of the parts except for the shift kit.
What is a good source for rebuild kits for the 5.0? P.A.W. has good prices from what I here. But are they quality parts? Summitt? Any suggestions or ideas?
This car will be a weekend cruiser/brawler when necessary. This will not be a drag car, but an all-around driver.
Thanx, Jay

PAW uses name brand parts but there are also some good deals to be had on ebay - also name brand parts and you spec what you want. Make sure you get a good shift kit like a Trans-go, not B&M.

I see you're goiing to use 1.7 roller rockers. Anyone out there using them as opposed to the regular 1.6's? I have the Comp Cams 1.6 rollers and was looking at the 1.7's but I have done a bunch of reading and seen articles where there was a HP LOSS using them on several mule engines in the common useable RPM ranges. On others it was a trade off of torque for HP. Love to hear from someone that has actually tried them on a SBF.

changing the ratio of the rockers will change the cam specs at the valve tip. nuthin wrong with it but you might wanna do a lil math and see what the result will be before you decide on the 1.7s. and don't forget that lil geometry change as well.

Is a shift kit necessry when doing a rebuild, or is it just to get slightly quicker shifts? On that note, what kind of maintance should be dne on my C4 to handle more power besides replacing seals and stuff?

Mine has the 1.7 rr's too. My total lift is .512 with the B303 cam.

I have Crane 1.7rr's as well, with the stock HO cam I have .476" lift at the valve....More lift and less friction equals lower oil temps and more power.

WOW. thats good to know thanks STU!!, i should be able to replace just the essentials with normal replacement parts to keep it low cost. Deffinentally wont be making close to 600 hp so shouldnt need anything fancy i guess. i figure my weak link will be rear the end but have a feeling ill just be rebiulding the 8in to handle the power. I dont have any local yards so dont know if its worth my time to do 8.8 or 9 and dont have much fabricating/welding skills. ill talk to the guys at mae and see how pricey it is to do a nice 8 in myself with nice parts- maybe the price will scare me into the junkyard teqnique.

Dan, if you want to think about an 8.8 rear = i've got a buddy that has one from a 90something Explorer. it's posi with drum brakes. he wants 200 bucks and is lookin to sell it NOW. so let me know if interested. i'll check on the gearing. if you want, i could meet you halfway if you decide on it. i've been lookin for eflow a 9" but most of the parts are gone from the housings when i find one

hmmm i know we already went over this but i got lost on the fact that some rears bolt right in and some dont. What kind of altercations am i looking at for a 8.8(drive shaft, leafs, axle lenth) is it really worth it buy an 8.8 for 200 and the rebuild for more when i could just rebuild the stock one for a similar cost?? Also, a more general ?: Will the 8.8's and 9's really take much more of a beating than an 8 in after both are rebuilt with comparable parts???

i'm usin an 8.8 on my Capri cause parts are really cheap n easy to get at the wreckers for me and because the car is so light it really wouldn't need a 9.the rebuild kits for 8.8 are pretty cheap too the rear he has is set for leafs cause thats what the Explorers had then, not so sure about now.

looked back at the thread and im still missing a few peices:
As far as shortening, how do you know wat length to shorten in to and what length axles are needed.
Also- are there driveshaft mods needed ( wouldnt see why)
Are there spring perches that will accomidate stock springs on his 8.8?
finally, ca you said that they run 80 to 90 at a yard around here, what makes his for 110 more better? might it need rebuild.
