Thanks to W2zero, I have an AOD swap page up and running on the 5.0 swap tech page. Andrew is going to do his version up and I will combine the best info from both to create an awesome AOD install page, thanks guys! ;D

Man, that's really cool. I'm not sure I really understand how he made the crossmember tho. The xmember I see underthere looks totally different from the one I have, but mine was a v-8 car. Do you know if he modified the frame extensions? I did read it...just a little confused. The front of them, or the back of them? Hard to tell from the pics too. Oh well, I'm sure I'll figure something out. You can also buy that piece he's talking about to make the shift linkage work..made by California Pony cars...I'll include that in my write up. Know what headers he runs? Andrew normally Stella62

Andrew, why wouldn't it let you sign in? This is why I would like your AOD tech too, so the article can have the best from both. W2zero, would you care to wade in on this? ;D

I think I had my cookies blocked... which sounds like I didn't chew them well enough. Anyway, I adjusted my settings and here I am. Yeah, I'll read it a couple more times. I'm hoping to throw my engine back in and start doing some measureing on Saturday as soon as the Tsunami passes thru. My fence blew down in the backyard yesterday.

Andrew
Craig here. Maybe I can shed a bit of light on what I was spewing. In the picture of the modified brackets and such, the frame extension at the top shows a bit of a weld seam at the section line. The extension just below it shows the square hole that is the other end of the section that I added. Bear in mind that my swap was from a six/auto and the length of the extensions may not be the same as for a V8 car. My crossmember is the stock original one. The only change I made was to drill it for the C4 transmission mount.
The pic with the rusty single pipe was when I ran out of budget and just fabbed a Y-pipe to drive to work with legal exhaust. I am using reproduction Hipo K cast manifolds. The whole swap took three weeks, two of which was vacation time and the last one to finish all the details.
I know there are swap parts available but I like the challenge of building my own and making it look plausibly stock. Plus I am extremely thrifty though some would call me cheap, though not easy.

Hey Craig, THanks for the clarification there. I think I got it figured out. You basicly "stretch limo" 'd them at the end nearest the crossmember? Cut them, weld in part of a box tubing and rewelded the old end? Maybe my computer sucks, but it looks like that in the pics to me.
Yeah, if I could make more stuff, I'd make all those parts too, but I"m kinda lazy and knew of the part so I just bought it. Who did you get your Hipo manifolds from? Dearborn Classics tells me they wont fit. Punks.

Nice, I wish I was going for hipo, but mine's an exercise in mpg. THat's my goal. If it sucks I'll pull the heading off and re-do it hotrod style. That's cool that the hipos fit with P heads tho. Never would a guessed that.

Stu
All the tweaks on the K manifolds are inside. I hogged them hummers out with the gusto of the hound dogs. On the outside I just cleaned up the casting flash so as not to cut my pinkies when changing the plugs. They are a tad close in places.

Ahh, you mention fuel economy. I have a short tale of same. I returned from a service call in Oregon back when I still had a job. I drove the Fairlane down to assess the situation and put a crew on the job. My job finished before theirs and I drove from Hillsboro to Tacoma and rarely dropped below 80 mph. That was when I still had the E6SE heads and performer intake and the Hipo exhaust hadn't been ported out yet. I got nearly 28 mpg with an Edelbrock 600 carb and the aod. That was with a 3:25 gear ratio and 25.5" diameter tire. I was getting 15 to 19 around town then. It uses a bit more gas now but it is a lot more fun.

Gas mileage....huh?.....what's that?..... My Merc is pretty good on gas. Last summer I drove to the drag strip in Liverpool, Nova Scotia. Its about 100 miles from here. I got about 17-19mpg. This included driving 70mph all the way down there ( honking it occassionally...hehe) and 1 WOT pass down the 1/4 mile before my infamous rear diff puked. I never really pay much attention to MPG around town, but it still hardly burns anything.
