I am really diggin that D.U.I setup. Really there is just about zero weakness in a upgraded H.E.I. They are reliable, perform well, and parts are avalible everywhere. I don't know much about ford ignitions, but if it works it works. I see so many guys my age with tame motors and $$$ invested in their fancy ignition systems. If reliability was my biggest concern, I would try and keep it simple. Having a 6AL fail isnt completely unheard of.

I keep a spare duraspark-II box in the trunk just incase. The only problem I've ever had with one was moisture, if it got wet it wouldn't start. It was on the 3.8 V6 in my 84 Mercury Capri. I changed over to my spare and it would fire right up. I couild swap in the old one a week later and it would run fine.

Yep you're right about the MSD boxes failing but usually that is pretty soon after hooking them up for the first time. That and letting all the smoke out of the box...........that ruins them. MSD will fix a hosed box and most generally the fix never fails.
DUI does look very inviting. Oldschool from the Carbd Ford Forum has a 289 crossram 8v setup with the coilpacks in front that looks most impressive. He was selling a home built ignition with a programmer and was planning on adapting it to the DUI too. Haven't heard from him in ages.

After a trip to J&M speed shop here in Riverside I got some more info on DUI/HEI systems for Fords. It seems that Pertronix is making a street/strip and a race version in this style as well starting at $220 complete (distrib, module, coil all in one). The only draw back is it is not produced for a roller cam 302. I guess they're not producing the correct gear.

the cam gear is about 40 bucks from ford and about a dollar from the wreckin yard.but the Pertronix is a brand i've heard pros and cons about thier being reliable-maybe thats where my phobia came from

Yeah I was talking about the gear swap out. But a straight drop in right out of the box can ruin the thing if you don't know. I was hearing about guys not paying too much attention and a week later they're wondering why the thing won't start.
As for my engine I would be surprised if there is a roller cam in it. But we'll find out as soon as I pull that old piece of junk intake off and put on my new Edelbrock. ;D

They say it's a 302 out of an '86 Thunderbird. But it has been rebuilt so it might or might be a roller motor (I think this was the first year it was offered in the Thunderbird, no?). The Only way to be sure is to look inside. I can't trust they guys I bought it from. Between the two of them they make up about 7/8s of a person. Considering what is on the outside who knows what they did inside.

ya know,i get down to the 15 and 60 interchange quite a bit, either going to pic a part or heading thru your little horsetown so if you need a hand with something just say so and i can make it a point to stop by maybe i could find a steel distributor gear on the way down

Cool, thanks.
You need to come by and pick up that AC unit, it's just getting moved around the garage until you take it.
I'm thinking I may just pull the whole motor. There are so many things going on with it that it may be easier to pull it out and do all the work on a stand, maybe clean and paint the darn thing too! As soon as I know what is going on inside a lot of things are going to fall into place (I hope...)

Most all the Ford 86 cars had a roller cam if it was a 302. I see the Ford HEI distributors new on Ebay with the billet gear for 99 to 125 bucks.

HEy guys, I remember the dudes selling your merc eflow....funny. Chevy dudes. Goofy. They really wanted to sell it to me though. I have a distributor for a roller cam motor, has a Duraspark connector with it, and a big later model cap. It's off my stinking 5.0 from when it had a Corroborater on it. Doan need that ennymohr. But i do need more chrome and polished aluminum and Beelitt.

The guy who did the engine swap disappeared to South America just after the initial swap was finished. The other two put all the crap on the block. No problem, I look at it like a puzzle.
Ca, thanks for the offer, I do have acces to a cherry picker but I need to get myself an engine stand though. Looks like a trip to Harbour Freight.

i have done the reading in this section and am still very lost. I am not sure exactaly what an ignition box does but can I get away with just using a coil and distributor. I am building a 5.0 possibly 331 roller with a .510 lift cam with heavily ported heads and oversized valves. Could anyone point me in the direction or a decent setup with pretty good performence. I am not building a moster or a high rever so I dont think Ill need the really good stuff like MSD. I would much rather save the money and put it towards a stroker. Does anybody know of or have used a good budget ignition system? I like the sounds of the 85 GT distributor.....can this be done with out an Ignition box and only a coil? Also does the 85 GT dist. have some kind of advance? Having some kind of advance would be nice. Please give me some input as I am trying currently to price things out and see If I will have enough $ for a the 29 extra cubes.
Thanks! dan
