they started in 76 or 77 with the Duraspark ll into the mid 80s. i checked with Autozone a while back on a late 70s Granada distributor and you can get it with the good gear for like 75 bucks. make sure you get the blue grommet box and you'll be all set ;D

I have read a few more artilces and it seems that most people think that the 85 5.0 HO stick shift distributor is best for performence. Stu wrote on that as well as a few others I read. Autozone sells 2 with steel gear and Im not sure which is the right one, both are Cardone remans but one says OEM and one does not. Also of those two one is sold 2 diff ways, with or without controle mudule. www.autozone.com/N,16200030//shopping/partTypeResultSet.htm thanks, dan Also is the grommet the litle plastic things to conect the wires? Is this the right one. Under related parts the list a pick up coil......do I need this as well....what does it do? www.autozone.com/R,APP37138/vehicleId,1151803/initialAction,partProductDetail/store,5713/partType,00029/shopping/partProductDetail.htm

you can't always go by those pics they put up. the steel gear dist is the same part # whether 78 granada or crown vic or 85 mustang 30-2831 and the box with the blue grommet is f102. all you need is the box/module and the dist and a coil and wire it up. the reason why that one is more expensive is because its the dist and module together. i got the 221 out of an 80 fairmont and it's the same as the one i got out of an 85 mustang for the capri except for the gear.
the dist i put together for my capri german 4cyl 2.o is from a german 2800 V6 with a reluctor out of an american 2.3 with a mustang module and a 2.3 rotor and cap= that was a lil challenging ;D

why does STU and other websites refer to the 85 mustang distributor as the better distributor if they are all the same? www.jason.fletcher.net/tech/duraspark/duraspark.htm seems to say that the advance curve is better on the 85 distributors and that although others will work they will need to me recurved......? PS I found a real confsing article on this at carbed ford about adjusting advance and all the fine tuning details......des user friendly is this setup.....will i only have to tune the vaccume advance or other things as well?

what about HEI systems, are they as good as using a factory ford distributor. what about something like this 250218620785. Will an HEI distributor run with the Duraspark II module? There seem to be a lot of cheap off brand HEI ignition setups.....am I better off staying with stock parts?
Thanks, Dan

when you buy a rebuilt it's gonna be a crap shoot on the curve.sometimes if you find the right book it will tell you which spring and weight should be in the dist, you can experiment with different springs and weights on yur own as well from dist parts you can grab at the wreckers.your buddies at the machine shop may have a dist machine to help you out with that stuff. i haven't had access to a dist machine for about 20 years but they sure are fun to play with ;D. stay with the Ford stuff unless you want to buy real good Mallory/MSD, but for street applications the Ford stuff is plenty good enough. like i said before - i've ran stock Ford stuff at over 8 grand at 22 lbs of boost and NEVER a problem

That 85 distributor is for roller cam applications and was only in the 85 Mustang GT 5spd. This was the one and absolutely only application for that distributor and it was a vacuum advance unit as well so it should have the steel gear.

I could only find the distributor advance springs from Mr. Gasket that let you reach full advance at 2000-2800 RPM which from what I am reading sounds pretty good. After some reading I was thinking goind with a 13L arm and like 16* initial which would bring me to 42 degrees total before vavume advance.....or I could go with a 10L arm and like 18 degrees initial. ...what does you guys think would be beter for .510 lift....4 bbl naturally aspirated. My only problem is finding these reluctor arms.....i guess my only option is to take the autozone distributor apart and hope to get lucky and I f I dont Ill have to hit the junk yard 5.0s? ? any better ideas.. Thanks for all the help guys/ and gals, -Dan

Are the reluctor arms the same things as the weights? If so I found the whole kit, Mr. Gasket set 925D. can someone confirm this?
thanks, Dan

hell, it's hard to say. find someone with a setup like your gonna end up with and kinda follow that. if it was me i'd just modify the arm to do what i wanted it to do BUT you need to do some more studyin first before you try that stuff. look around and you will find the arm you need and spring kits can be gotten as well. the vacuum advance won't increase your timing past the stops or add to the total, it just comes in at cruisin speeds to help with mileage.a lot of people with HiPo type engines don't run vacuum advance cause it will come in when you don't want it to and in racing it wouldn't serve any purpose. your probly better off with the 10 and a higher initial. or find out what the specs are on the 85 5L and copy that - if thats what you feel like
