it i fine to start the engine but do not drive the car until you go through the brake system. new master cylinder wheel cylinders and the rubber hoses at the front wheels and the one at the rear axle housing is an easy job. you may want new shoes and turn the drums if need. that is a good looking car. i know you will enjoy it.

So spoke to my Grandmother today and hope to have it in WA state by the middle of June, can't wait! I asked her if she would start to gather all the paperwork and she has on the car. She did mention that they drove it three years ago and had the raditor or something replaced along with some belts so we will see what I have.....
Just dawn on me that if I want this car for a family cruiser I need to add one seatbelt in the back? What is involved to add a seat belt?? The other thing I need to know is what is the overall width and length of the car? I know I can probably find it here somewhere but if someone has it handy that would be great. Oh and one more thing if one was going to buy a good shop manual is there one that is preferred over another?
Sorry for all the questions.....
Thanks again Todd

Buy the 62 Fairlane shop manual and the 63 supplement. That will cover it. The seat belts are an easy add, on. I put another pair back there with original type grade-8 eyebolts and matching huge G-8 washers and they were ridiculous inexpensive too.
Good idea to have g-ma to dig up any and everything to do with the car. Provenance is good. There are some fussy parts to find on the Meteor but not impossible. Just about everything mechanical is available and most of the rest is rebuildable.

the 62 Meteor manual shows up on Ebay for from 5 to 25 bucks pretty much all the time. in 63 they just made a supplement to it and usually on Ebay for 5 to 10 bucks. couple of secrets in the Meteor book that we don't tell the Fairlane guys about ;D
i just drilled mine for rear belts and am usin big washers and a piece of 3/16x1" flat stock to tie the bolt holes together just to ease the paranoia of pull through in case of an accident. i know it's overkill but......

Search this site for your hardware. www.andoauto.com/hardware.htm They have original looking hardware and it is all good stuff. The reinforcing plates are there as well. My hardware was stupid cheap to buy from them. I used the eye bolts but in retrospect, the bolt down plates with an angle to them would probably have done as well as the original sister hook ends they carry.

Ok so it's getting closer to bringing the Merc home.....
So regarding the fuel tank I was going to drain and then get it cleaned out but..... When we drain it if it drains clear ie lack of rust should it still be cleaned? A buddy of mine was saying if drained clean then it should be fine??? He was also concerned about the wheel cylinders needing to be replaced being it has sit for probably three years does this sound right?
Thanks Todd

By all means have the tank cleaned just draining it does not remove the sediment that is stuck on the bottom. As for the brakes the brake fluid and the wheel cylinder rubbers should be replaced. It is more the labor that takes the time than the costs of the rubbers. Replacing the rubbers will give you a chance to see if the cylinders have been pitted from condensation. It is an awful feeling to step on the brakes and nothing there to stop the car except a wall or the likes (just ask me)

If it was regularly driven and maintained, then draining the tank and the brake fluid should tell you the story. Crud in the fluid or gas will be a good indication of what to do next. Wheel cylinders are readily available and cheap. Tanks are very available and about 300 bucks.
