I picked up this Ford niner out of a '65 T-Bird at the Pomona Auto Swap Meet yesterday. It has 3.00 gears and an open diff. Paid $100. It still needs a posi unit and some 3.89 or 4.11 gears to make it complete, IMHO. It is a smal tube housing but the T-birds had oversize bearings so that helps. I don't think I'm going to be putting so much power to the ground that I'll need a heavy duty one anyway. Plus there wasn't a heavy duty niner to be found for less than $400 and none of them had posi or anything but highway gears (so add another $300 on top of THAT to make it right?...no way!).

does it need to be cut/shortened down to length or did you luck out big time??? Tell me more, as I am going to need a new rear. Probably end up with 8.8 but may as well explore the options. Does it have spring perches in the diff?

Spring perches can be had for under twenty bucks from Speedway. The 57 through 63 Ford nines are already narrow enough. Cutting a housing and shortening it isn't rocket science either. Old school was to rent or borrow a big pipe cutter and lop off the extra length. If you can narrow the housing to accept a standard length axle, then Superior will get you into new ones for around two hundred bucks.

I'm not too sure about narrowing. I have some big cheaters to go on the rear. Since I'm going for a '60s AFX styled gasser I may radius the body...(listens for shreiks and the gnashing of teeth). Also, the rear leaf springs are going bye-bye in favor of ladder bars and some sweet coil-overs from Speedway. There wil be leaf springs in the front to support the '53 I-beam straight axel. The rear end was the last piece I needed before starting fabrication.

Cool!!! If I can get one the right length, it makes less work for me. But are there ways to do a disk swap onto the older nines? that would be sick. I am assumeing that spring perches are just welded on to outside of tube, and copme in all widths. Am i forgetful, or howcome no said an older 9 will go in without shortening? ?

Eflow is not concerned about the width Dan = he is going to cut out the wheel wells(radius) = like make them round like the tire. generally people they to stuff the rearend and tires into the stock wheelwells , so they narrow them. if you don't mind makin the wheelweels a lil modified - you can put any rearend WIDTH that you want in the car.
do a search for "ford rearend(or rear end) WIDTH and you will get a load of info.
when you start askin how LONG or SHORT a rear is a lotta guys i've hung aroung with will think yur talkin bout gears(ratio) and not WIDTHS of a rear. like "i'm gonna shorten up the rear" would mean yur puttin higher(numerically) gears in it and if yur gonna "give it some legs" would mean yur gonna put some lower(numerically) gears in it but if you say " i'ma puttin lower gears in it" that means that yur puttin higher(numerically) gears in it and if you say i'ma puttin higher gears in it that means yur puttin lower(numerically) gears in it. confused yet? i know i am ;D

Ca, now my head hurts. Somebody send the paramedics to Dan's garage after that explanation. Here's a good shot of the stance I'm going for and rear wheel placement. The wheel base won't be altered too much, maybe six inches in the rear. The tires have a much wider diameter so we are going to place the back of the tire where the stock wheel well ends and then radius forward. So that will move our axel forward some.

It was on the cover of Hot Rod a year or so back, along with a blue one. Most of the guys from that article brought their cars out to a nostalgia drag event at Pomona. That's where this picture came from (I think). I didn't take this one myself but I remember both cars.

and you don't NEED rear discs onna hot rod = could result in slower ET's. i picked up some rotors for the rear of my Capri today and it feels like they weigh bout 20lbs each. combine that with the weight of the cast iron calipers and i dont like it at all. i dont care about the " GOTTA have huge disc brakes everywhere" bling factor. so if i cant find/afford some lightweight rotors/calipers someday i'll probly go back to drums - specially for the quarter mile stuff.
plus they are made in friggin china - how safe can they be?
