I'm still wondering why you need to swap out the rear end, Dan? I mean, if you're not going to be building a lot of power what is the use of a stout 9 inch? It seems like Joeyman is doing just fine with his stock Meteor rear end. Why not just toughen up what you already have and spend the money on a posi unit for it or some rear discs? You can go the 9 inch route, that's cool too. But I made a similar point to my buddy Brent, he wanted me to get a heavy duty nine mainly because it looked cool not because he really thought I needed the extra strength. I went with a narrow tube because I think the cash would be better spent on something else, like the engine.

Eflow.....thank you for "slapping" me into check sometimes my eyes and ambitons are bigger than my wallet or timeframe. i think you bring really good point with joeyman; and rebuilding also has its benifits. I will have a nice amount of power but definentally no more than joeyman.(what do you consider a lot?) With the 5.0 going in and rebuilt tranny, it might make things move quicker to reuse the 8 in rear, and it should be able to take the power. If anything at all I may still want to use an explorer spring on my 8 but that might just require some fooling around. does anyone know what an 8 in disk swao entails? can you use old axles? if i cant get the cheap ill use drums (prob woul've used drums with an 8.8) Thanks for insight!!! -dan PS-hope im not running on and on in circles too much but this put me back into perspective

The 8" diffs are hit and miss, I broke mine at the strip with 14x5 rims, 205-70-14 tires and 208HP/287ftlbs at the wheels....She seized the spiders to the pin like I had a posi...LOL

Well we took my third member out and went thru it put a alburn posi with a 4:10 or 4:11 gear (richmond) can't remember been so long. Them rear end's were built tough back then.........It will hold up..........and when it break's on you then upgrade..........it will be awhile if you plan on street driving it with street tire's..........you start running cheater slick's and what not then you start putting alot more stress back there.

In my case it's worth changing out. I think Dan will be fine with a new third member and a locker or posi unit to help things along and then just keeping the original rear end. I really think it will be enough for the usual street roddin kinda stuff.

If he going to be on the street definatly not a locker..........He would be better off with a good POSI

You can run a locker on the street, hey're just a bit noisy. And I really was refering to a traction-lock Ford version of a posi. I should have been clearer.

Hm, I run a locker on the street. Noisy for sure.
A rebuilt eight inch will easily handle 300 hp and likely be a lot cheaper than building a nine inch to swap in there. Most of them that fail are just the result of a big bump in hp tearing up an old worn out diff.

What is the diff between a locker and a posi tracktion? ?? Any why would locker be noisy? My car is going to be 99% street use with maybe once a year at the track to fool around. Joey how much hp/torque are you running at the crank/ to the wheels?

Posi, a GM term is the same basic idea as FoMoCo's Track Lock and uses a series of clutches and steel discs to tie the two axles together. The clutches slip when you corner.
A locker is a different animal all together. It uses crennelated discs that lock together with a spring to allow the axles to turn independently of each other when cornering. That engage/disengage results in a ka-chunk, ka-chunk noise ratcheting around corners.

yea! thanks really informative. not sure which would be better for MY street use, but it sounds like the posi?? but it seems if you wanna go fast all the time the locker is better.

minimandan1 that did not make sense what you just wrote.
The locker or posi doesn't make your car go faster it is a traction thing. The motor it what make's it go faster...............Also different gear's make it go faster.
Sorry I must have been having a brain fart...............I was thinking about a spool........you don't want to run a spool on the street. That's a NO NO. Locker you can Spool NO. Sorry Yes locker's are noisy.
