My ffob, formerly fat old brother, was a dealership mechanic back in the day. According to him the quality control in the early sixties was pretty horrible. He said it wasn't all that unusual to find a difference of half an inch on the Fairlane/Meteor platform wheelbase. Seems the guys at the factory may have disagreed on how many turns and in what direction to turn the uper inner shafts. "No dammit! Three turns clockwise to MY right!"

Okay, I'm going to modify the shock towers. My buddy is now done with the big sand sport show and will have time in his shop to work on my car. I know that some have had luck with their headers, but things are SO tight in there I have to open the space up some. Now, I ordered the kit but Crites is recomending the lower brace repalcement for header clearance. I have problems only with the towers being too tight, do I really need this other part?

i called Crites n their guy said you need to use the lower brace if you plan on using a big block for like a T-bolt conversion as the extra weight wants to push the a-arms out.kinda like pushin the frame apart in that spot, from what he said have your dune buggy builder buddy look at it and he can probly come come up with sumpthin at least as good if not better than what they suggest just from experiance with shock and spring mounts in the buggys. but like i said the guy at Crites said the extra was for a big block conversion.

They said nothing about big block or weight. I was right up front that I had a 302 and they told me I needed it for clearance. :/
Same shop two different answers...go figure?!
I'll scrap the lower brace for now, it doesn't look like I'll need it.

Are ye talkin about that piece of curved pipe with the ends mashed flat? It's pretty useless so the replacement would be good. I saw a 64 Fairlane with that piece tossed. He cut the towers and inner fenders out and ran a tube from the roll cage to the front of the frame through the firewall and mounted a coilover from the tube to the lower control arm. He was turning low tens with a 289 4spd.

Stu- I did buy the super comps! They just don't fit! I've got NO clearance on the driver side, they are laying against the tower. And I can't even get the one in position for the passenger side. I've got new motor mounts coming too. So I'll check that first (maybe the buggers are the wrong mounts!) but I really don't think that's the problem. If that isn't it, I'm a'cuttin!

Hm, any chance your shock towers are creeping towards the engine? It does happen. Once you have the motor mounts maybe that will cure the problems.

Thats the RF brake line, it runs across the fire wall behind the engine. It's not that tight, it's hard to judge distance in a picture. Like I said, we set the engine in, raised it off the mounts slightly and dropped in the headers from the top. We had the hood off too.
